A September 13 article on MLIVE discussed the potential demolition of the chimney swift roost at 415 W. Washington Street, across from the Ann Arbor YMCA. Washtenaw Audubon intends to try to save the chimney from demolition to protect the roosting Chimney Swifts at this site. A resolution is being prepared that would require consideration of the chimney swift issue in all development proposals; council members from all wards will vote on whether to pass this resolution, which will be an essential first step in speaking out for the swifts.

If you are an Ann Arbor resident, it is IMPERATIVE that you let your councilperson and the mayor know where you stand on this issue immediately. You can simply forward the MLive link above via email and say "I support saving the chimney at 415 W. Washington for the swifts." Please sign with your name and address so that your residency is established. This is very time sensitive, so please do this as soon as possible. If there are two of you in your household, please both respond; you are individual voters and it is citizen response that will drive this issue.

There is also a Historic District Commission (HDC) meeting on Thursday, September 20. Their agenda includes a Notice to Proceed with demolition of all structures on the 415 W. Washington properties. We need to make sure the HDC knows you care, so please copy them on your letter to City Council, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

We are desperately trying to earn a place at the table as proposals come in about how to handle this abandoned property. The City Council and Mayor need to hear that a significant number of Ann Arbor residents care about the Chimney Swifts roosting in the chimney. This is your chance to make a big difference with a small contribution of your time.

Please also share this plea and this Chimnery Swift Fact Sheet widely to your Ann Arbor friends via email and social media. The City of Ann Arbor needs to hear that its citizens care about the plight of the swifts! Additionally, commenting on the MLive article will make it more visible, as articles are tiered according to interest shown. However, the most important thing is to let your councilperson know and ask your fellow Ann Arbor voters to do the same.

With sincere thanks for your "swift" response!
