All Events

All feld trips have been canceled until further notice. We will continue to asses the situation and update this space accordingly. Going outside and enjoying nature is a great way to relieve stress and pass these trying times. We encourage you to do so while practicing responsible social distancing.

Our in-person meetings at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens have been canceled until further notice. However, we are reviewing the possibility of bringing these programs to your home computers via webinars. Thus, the meetings will remain on our online calendar for now. Check back here as this situation evolves.

General Details:

  • Birding begins anytime after midnight on March 14th and concludes at 11:00 AM sharp.
  • Register your team or register as an individual to be placed on a team.
  • Teams will consist of a minimum of three people. Bonus points for team members that have never been to a Washtenaw Audubon Society outing (see scoring below).
  • Each team selects one public road in Washtenaw County to bird on March 14th. The following roads are NOT eligible for the competition: Huron River Drive, Michigan Avenue, North Territorial.
  • More than one team is allowed to use a given road. Teams will not "own" a road.
  • A species will count if it is identified (sight and/or sound) by at least half of your group.
  • Teams must bird together and stay within fifteen feet of the edge of your chosen road in Washtenaw County.
  • If your road has a break or a shift, you can only count the birds observed from your road, not the connecting ones. Examples of interrupted roads include: 5 Mile, 6 Mile, 7 Mile, Arkona, Austin, Bemis, Braun, Jennings, Jerusalem, Lima Center, Maple, Morgan, Napier, Northfield Church, Textile, Trinkle, Sharon Hollow, Steinbach, Willow and Zeeb.
  • Hybrids of species are interesting, but they won't count.

Scoring per Team:

  • One point for each species identified.
  • One bonus point for each species not found by any other team.
  • Two bonus points for new participants.
    • Maximum 6 bonus points per team.
    • New participants are defined as those who have never participated in ANY previous Washtenaw Audubon Society outing.

  • Drive safely and predictably.
  • Do not obstruct traffic.
  • Be visible - wear bright colors.
  • Be courteous and alert.
